I don't agree but I think it has more to do with our definitions of asshole. I think girls typically desire resistance and control over them. They will test men for their manhood which demands the man to stay resilient and unwavering. Men are unfortunately not allowed to show weakness too often. This is what I think most people mean by guys needing to be assholes.
Ultimately I believe this behavior shows its face because girls seek security from their partners (for example, that's why they like tall and strong men. they feel protected) and want a leader. However, I think you can demonstrate this without being a complete asshole.
However, when I think of an "asshole" I imagine an irredeemable piece of shit. Somebody who doesn't celebrate anything with them, constantly emotionally deprives them, etc. I simply do not believe a relationship like that is very sustainable. And if it is it's probably because they feel trapped or afraid of life outside the relationship.
Unrelated tangent but this is also why I hate Andrew Tate type figures. Aside from being snake oil salesmen to young and insecure men, they go way too hard in the other direction. It's appealing to young men because they feel like they have no agency in their lives. Keeping women down gives them a feeling of control over their lives.
And again, some women do prefer this but you have to ask yourself if that's the type of person you want to have around. And what does that say about them?
But hey I don't have much experience myself so I'm probably also a bullshitter. 2D girls take 0 maintenance and are way hotter so I don't exactly want to put up with women shit tests myself
