I'm a middle aged man. I've been in relationships with women for a total of 20 years at this point, split between four different LTRs. I am friends with six happy couples and I'm in a beautiful marriage myself. I know a little bit.

Not OP, but unless we have some sort of trustful data that can effectively measure how shitty someone is (which is impossible given the subjective nature of it), the only reliable source anyone can have is their own experiences, which include reaching out for external opinions.
