>what if we repeated the 2008 housing market crash but with cars instead
Why is this company allowed to exist again?

There's zero possibility of contagion. Auto loans aren't that important.

Because dealing with car salesmen is worse.

Pretty much. People defaulting on auto loans won't crash the economy because the car itself is the collateral for the loan. However, they are definitely a symptom of larger issues and shouldn't be ignored because they indicate that a lot of people are facing financial hardship

It's self imposed hardship. They don't need to buy a 60000 dollar truck. The reason the defaults won't impact the economy much is because the holders of those loans already know they're risky. MBSs were also backed by collateral but everyone thought they were safer than they really were. Also MBSs were a much larger market.

As an outsider this looks quite normal, is there something special the company is doing or are muricans not buying used cars usually?

Have you seen the average retail car price? This isn't Europe where you can buy an electric car for $10k.

You can get vehicles for cheaper here. Civics are like 30k. Most people who buy trucks don't need trucks. The reason we can't buy cheap vehicles here is all the protectionism we place around the auto industry. I'd love for all that to go away so Ford has to actually compete against the Chinese instead of just popping out shitty trucks and selling them for 100k.

A house is collateral for a home loan. But its' easier to get the funds to buy a car so a spike in car repos just mean slightly lower prices in the used car market.

If I'm spending thirty thousand fucking dollars, I deserve a nicer car than a Civic, which should cost more like $10k. I'm not disagreeing with your premises, but I am disagreeing with your conclusions.

Either way the high price of vehicles here is from protectionism and we should just let the Chinese flood us with their shitty EVs so Ford and GM get their shit together and start making decent vehicles again.

Because it works for everyone that matters.
You can sell your piece of shit car not worth 2k on FB marketplace, to caravana for 6k or more. Just report it's all good, they pay cash and literally dont give a shit. They make their money back ten times over by financing their own vehicles and getting ten times the money back from repossessing the same sports car non stop.

Car costs are driven up by labor. I live in metro Detroit, these union guys do barely any work and get paid more than non union guys with masters degrees in the defense sector, it's fucking insane.
The only problem is that the price of cars has gone up to what the market will bear. The only pressure applied is to automation, the breakpoint for automation being cheaper than labor will just mean even if the car cost near nothing to make, they will not lower the price. EV's are also a huge scam since they're just way cheaper to manufacture compared to an actual car with an engine.

they're more expensive than nothing
it's well known that this is why insurance has skyrocketed. The lanekeeping and auto-braking stuff depends on sensors in the bumper. For a car with no tech if you ding your bumper that's what, a few hundred bucks? Get new bumper (it's just a piece of high-strength plastic) and have whatever random guy is working that day take off the old one and put the new one on. With tech all of a sudden the bumper is full of cameras and lidar sensors and those have to be not only hooked up but calibrated to the gorillion computers in the car, so now it's a $2500 repair between parts and labor. All for something that mostly just beeps and flashes and irritates you while you're driving, but they no longer let you buy a car without that stuff. (((Standard Feature))) on all trim levels.

Retard, illegals bring cheap labor, and cheap labor means cheap products. The people to blame for expensive products are CEOs.

Lol more workers mean companies can pay workers less.
Smaller labor pool increases the value of labor.
Illegals are the excuse companies can use to not pay anyone well and you're eating out of their hand

China's EVs are actually more expensive to produce than you know. China has a long tested policy of trying to crash the market of anything produced in the West by subsidizing it, and then when those companies fail and the Chinese companies have captured the entire global market, they stop the subsidies and let the prices normalise. They know that the cost of regulations, safety, labour etc. are higher in the West so they can always destroy our industries at a whim

The money is going to the company, it's no different from how the US subsidizes corn farmers. I don't know why we get mad about this though, China is basically willing to pay us to take their shitty cars and we refuse to allow it.

Cars are expensive because the government insists on protecting the US auto industry from foreign competition, free trade fixes this.
