The fall of Rome sunk Europe into a quagmire for 1000 years. Popes fighting other popes. Barbarian Lords and princes fighting for hundreds of years over territory smaller than Maryland. Education outlawed for any but the most devoted monks. The inquisition, the crusades, etc etc.

It wasn't until after the black plague cut Europe's population by 50% and allowed the merchant class to rise above papal power did Europe even begin to start prospering again.

Christianity (or any authoritarian religion) is poison for society and history has recorded it as such.
