Downsides are the ever-present risk of them figuring out your identity, and having you on the hook for child support and whatnot. As well, the logistics can be a bother, frequent STD tests and travel. On a more personal note is the issue of how you'd feel about fathering kids you probably will never see, and the women themselves potentially falling for you. It can be a great thing but it isn't easy, if you want to commit to it and not shoot yourself in the foot.
As for how it's done, there's online sites and services where people seek this arrangement. Either men offering or women requesting. I personally just keep to my own country, although I have had foreign women staying here and wanting it. You follow up with them, go through the usual screening process, sort out the details, then meet up and get it done. It's unlikely to happen from just once so you usually end up figuring something out together.

I try to keep it casual, it's the women who sometimes want things differently. Some, like actual lesbians want it as clinical as possible. Others as said above may want something romantic and/or become clingy about it.
