I think it's more a bird telling a fish how to fly. The bird doesn't understand the fish is a different creature and the fishes "wings" won't send him upwards. They just say thins like "be yourself" because they don't understand what actually work for them, nor do they understand what being "yourself" actually details.

That said it's rather stupid too seek a guide out over anything. It's trail and error all the way up, you either learn through experience or you give up out of fear or pain, but usually most give up from fear of pain.

It's kind of true but misleading. If you're going to be yourself, you'll need to be confident and I think that generally makes a lot of people challenge you for being unique. If you're able to put up with that and learn how to navigate it smoothly, then I reckon that's the full picture of what this means.
