In case I didn't make myself clear--at gov jobs, you aren't really hired on merit. In the private sector, you can argue your case because you could point to things like that I was the first to complete all my training, I worked the most hours, I was never late, I performed the best etc., and those things may be viewed as a matter of economics. That someone will hire you because they want to maximize profits. In the public sector, it's really about keeping your job, and it's very hard to get fired once you're in (so all my colleagues told me), and they get really good benefits. It's a different ball game to what I'm used to.
