to americans western europe is basically welfare paradise, and gets called 'socialist' by critics a lot. japan and the nordic countries are glazed relentlessly. eastern europe is considered backwards because of russian revolution/cold war propaganda.
i don't blame immigrants who move to the US looking for opportunities but the american dream is essentially a myth. it also depends on where in the US you move i suppose, but (anecdotally) a lot of people distrust russians, most people think the accent is cool though. americans (anecdotally) also have poor understanding of what happens in eastern europe so they think all CIS countries support russia or are russia-lite, except ukraine.
