most mental anguish is just people holding double think ideas and their unconscious mind trying to force them to break out of it to find consistency and wholeness of the self, the symptoms will resolve if you integrate the contradictory ideas by resolving the contradiction
then there are the mental illnesses that come from brain chemistry which is like finding a lightswitch in a dark warehouse where the power is cut out, even if you find the reason it resolves nothing and all you can do is postpone / mitigate symptoms with pills and coping
