oooh i watched that one as a kid when anime was being illegally uploaded to youtube, i think it made me kinda gay because i self-inserted as the mc...
i don't know what the first anime i watched was, i think it was either ghost in the shell, bleach, or naruto. i watched everything on adult swim so my first anime is kinda tied between everything they were airing.

the first animes I ever watched was because mom flipped through channels on a hotel room tv and Dragon Ball was on the tv for like 5 seconds then she changed the channel but I didn't know it had been Dragon Ball until years later and I still haven't watched the rest of the series

it's definitely an anime with anime elements and archetypes, and there's nothing western about it (except maybe the dubs) but it's for children and may not qualify as a "real" anime for that reason, like for example they started censoring Misty's midriff by making her hold Togepi in the later eps.
saying pokemon isn't an anime is like saying Sailor Moon isn't an anime when it's obviously 100% anime. they used to air near each other on TV
