ignorance can be observed in a lot of the population from the highest wrung to the lowest, the rich that have conscience have to believe that the people in the squalor are either unlucky with defects or choosing to be there out of laziness or are there because of some wrong they've done, the fact that the math doesn't add up with open positions, cost of living and number of people in the nation does not enter their mind, to think that would be to acknowledge that the same system that elevated them is condemning people to awful conditions as a matter of pure mathematical impossibility of providing decent living conditions for them without major structural change
the same goes for the impoverished, they would rather believe in a higher power, in some luck just waiting around the corner or that their hardships are just a test of their virtues, to acknowledge that they live in a corrupt dystopia would be crushing to them, they have to believe either that the system can be fixed with parliamentary socialism or that they will have their lucky break eventually if they just hold on
to do otherwise would drive both parties of conscience and self awareness to suicide, such thoughts are filtered by the mind of the person to preserve them
it takes a certain amount of masochism and love of the truth to see the world as it is, from all sides like a pyrrhonist and to bear the weight of that knowledge
most people cannot even accept that they were born into poverty, what they will amount to will most likely not be what they dreamed of and that their only other choice from living a mediocre life of toil is to fall into drug addiction, to become a short lived criminal or to kill themselves
even the ideas of rebellion against the system that exploits them is but a pipe dream for it would only work if all the downtrodden would rise up together at the same time, occupy wall st proved that the system and the higher ups would never allow unity with the masses
