When someone has bad mental health, maybe it's because of genuine problems in their life. It could be job struggles, relationship struggles, money struggles, abuse, addiction, whatever.
Society just wants to sweep those issues under the rug. "We don't care about your problems. Just drug yourself so you'll shut up and fall in line."

I was hospitalized, and they handcuffed me to bed, until somebody from court came to check if I can be hospitalized against my will. (2 days later). They found me shitted in my bed, they laughed very loudly and decided I can be kept at hospital.
Later I was forcefully electrocuted straight to head, because they probably want me to forget, that they tied handcuffs so much, that I had swollen arm.
That because I refused to be "we'll keep you here for 3days for diangostics"

In recent time, there was girl in some American University which identified symbiotic fungi, that grows with Ipomnea Tricolora/Purpurea responsible for making LSA found in it's seeds. Bulk price for those seed is like $100/kg , which contains about 20 grams of LSA, when you have LSA, you convert said Lysergic Amide to Lysergic Acid, and convert that to Diamide, and viola, you have like "few doses" of LSD per $600bux of total cash you need. Also, there are mushrooms that produce 4-ho-DMT, which grows on wood chips, literally do you know how much is ton of wood chips? Like $300max, You can get several tons of woodchips being infected by fungi which produces medicinal mushees. I understand why pharmaceutical companies need to modify something in a way you cannot do it at home, otherwise they couldn't get any money from treatment... And that's also why they want to outlaw the nature's way of doing stuff.

>>16698162I've never been diagnosed with mania or bipolar. You are jumping to false conclusions.
>>16698213I'm not a "conspiritard", I'm just a person who had an episode of not-so-great mental health, during which I was put in mental hospital and injected with antipsychotics. I think my opinion of psychiatry would be more positive if psychiatric drugs were completely voluntary. I just don't think it's fair to drug a person against their will, especially considering the many negative effects of antipsychotics (they shrink the brain, they cause extrapyramidal symptoms, they can cause tardive dyskinesia, etc). These are real effects on real people. But it all just gets waved away.
Surely if a person is not committing any crimes then their freedoms and rights should be respected.
>>16698526To be honest I have no idea if magic mushrooms or LSD are good for the brain. I know someone who took LSD and he seems fine these days. I've never done those drugs though.
Psychiatry's medications are imperfect, and so are medications in other fields of medicine. But normally patients have a choice. A person could reject chemotherapy if they want. So maybe psych patients should be allowed to reject meds too, given that the meds have a lot of bad effects.
Some might say "but psych patients could be dangerous". I actually think locking someone up is not so bad, if they're a potential danger. I didn't mind being locked up too much. The thing I minded much more was being drugged against my will. It should be my decision which substances I put in my body.
>>16698532>The worst part is that you people are 100% confident in what you're saying and will yell at whoever tries to correct you and threaten to sue themI'm not him but I can understand his annoyance at the involuntary psychiatry that was done to him (I think he's the guy who said ECT was done to him). In my case I was injected with antipsychotics against my will, but thankfully I never had ECT.
Treatments in many areas of medicine are imperfect, and often have bad side effects. So maybe it should be a patient's choice to decide if they want antipsychotics, or if they want ECT. If a patient is genuinely a danger, maybe they could be locked up, but not forcibly drugged. I didn't mind being locked up too much. I was much more bothered by the forcible drugging which made me feel extremely strange. Then I looked up the side effects (e.g. raising prolactin, potential tardive dyskinesia) and I was even more annoyed at having been forcibly drugged.
>>16699218Psychiatry is not a science.
>>16699220I could not explain people like psychiatrist, that I really do need internet connection a some computational means, to maintain in loop. I lost everything I've had on my computer, many times in history, because I haven't remembered password after they medicated/electrocuted me. Imagine, having crypto funds, people you know online, like everything digital from you lost.
>>16699260I think they use science. But I also think the science of psychiatry is distorted by Big Pharma's money. Here's an example of that:
>a third of meta-analyses of antidepressant studies were written by pharma employees>these were 22 times less likely than other meta-studies to include negative statements about the drughttps://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-hidden-harm-of-antidepressants/
We should be pro-science and anti-corporate-manipulation of science. I do think psych meds can have some beneficial effects, but studies also indicate negative effects. That's why I think it should be a patient's choice whether to take meds or not.
>>16699273That sucks if you've actually forgotten your passwords after medication/ECT. Sorry to hear that. Perhaps I am lucky because that has not happened to me after I was injected with antipsychotics. And I was lucky to not have ECT. I said in a previous post that in my country, I think they can administer ECT against a patient's will, if they think the patient is in a very bad state. It's pretty worrying to think that doctors, according to their own judgement, can just decide to give you ECT against your will. I do think I'm lucky to have not had that.
>>16699323Well, I wonder what would happen to healthy people if they ware given anti-psychotics and told they are insane and only on that pill they can be sane.
>>16699331True. It's easy for "normal" people to not give a shit about psychiatric treatment, because it isn't done to them. If it was done to them, they'd complain immediately, like anybody would.
I think people should be free to take psych meds if they want. I think it should be the patient's choice, with informed consent, as is normally the case in medicine. I also think locking someone up who is potentially dangerous is probably okay, if that's the only way to keep other people safe. But drugging someone against their will - I'm not a big fan of that. Antipsychotics, according to medical sources, do have bad effects. So maybe it should be the patient's choice rather than something which is imposed upon them against their will.

>more people = larger sample that could contain a ~ 1 in 100 billion virus capable of extinction
Should the human population be capped for this reason?
>>16699678>genetics resistant to vaccinesThat's not how vaccines work, they aren't antivirals
>>16699680Ok resistant to antivirals or bacteria resistant to antibiotics
>>16699678an extinction event from a virus is basically impossible
as the population dwindles so does the rate of spread
covid was such a let down imo. black death caused the greatest increase to wages in history
>>16699678>>hypothetically a virus that could easily wipe out humanity could existNot, it couldn't. High lethality reduces spread, it would also have to overcome all of genetic variation within all humans which is highly implausible, literally basics of epidemiology. Not to mention isolated pockets of population with little to no contact with the global network.
>>16699678You've not accounted for the fact that humans can evolve too.
2 shifts left of 3rd year med school its finally over
>>16699762>as the population dwindles so does the rate of spreadYou are assuming it can only be spread by humans. There are viruses that can infect humans and non-human animals and freely spread between them and even examples of those viruses which don't cause significant damage to their animal hosts. Another alternative to preserve rate of spread would be shit like HIV or rabies or prion diseases or chicken pox where the terminal phase is significantly removed from the point of infection.
Basically what I'm saying is imagine airborne rabies carried by asymptomatic migratory birds and also city birds. Or don't if you'd like to be able to sleep at night.

Shotgun blast to the head is more likely to kill you than trying to overdose on pills (the latter gives you time to change your mind & call 911, or for someone to find you and call 911). The surgery profession is dominated by men, far more than the other medical fields listed there. Anesthesiologists are going to be good at committing suicide, for obvious reasons (entire job is putting someone on the brink of death). It's also very male heavy.
The overwhelming majority of suicide attempts fail (47,500 successful suicides out of 1.4 million attempts), so one of the biggest factors to examine when analyzing suicide numbers is whether the person is likely to use an effective method.

a) Don't take antidepressants and wait for my serotonin receptors to get back to normal (this could take weeks or a couple months)

So basically your shitty drugs have made my brain dependent. Psychiatry is so shit.

Good evening, /med/:
Whenever I poo I have hard, pebble-like poo blocking the rest of my poo (which is diarrhea the consistency of soft-serve ice cream). It causes really bad bloating that I can visually observe in my stomach. It used to happen only a few times every week but itโs literally every time I go now. I had a colonoscopy a year or two ago because I kept finding blood on my stool (this hasnโt happened in a long time now, but Iโve experienced it off and on for around 5 years). I had a small polyp removed during the colonoscopy but was told it wasnโt medically concerning. I occasionally (once every two or three months) take Dulcolax for bad flare ups and it helps, but Iโm hesitant to use it more as Iโve heard it can cause more issues with regular use. Iโve expressed to doctors how frustrating it is but the only suggestion has been a FODMAP diet which I didnโt find hugely helpful. Should I just take the Dulcolax more regularly? Iโm not worried about it being anything too serious because I had the colonoscopy and I figure if it was serious it would have killed me by now, just trying to find a solution.

1. Dentist Suicide Rates Compared to Others
- The general U.S. suicide rate is about 0.42% of total deaths.
- One controversial study claimed dentists had a 7.18% suicide rate (8.02% for males, 5.28% for females).
- More reliable studies estimate around 1.8% of dentist deaths are suicides, slightly higher than the general population (1.2%).
- The CDC (2016) grouped dentists with other healthcare workers, ranking them 11th in suicide rates (19 per 100,000), far below jobs like farming (85 per 100,000).
2. Gender Differences
- Female dentists may have a slightly higher risk, but recent data (Austria, 2023) found no significant increase.
- Male dentists generally do not show elevated suicide rates in modern studies.
3. How Dentists Compare to Doctors
- Female physicians have a suicide rate 2.39 times higher than the general population.
- Male physicians have a lower overall rate, though older males may be at higher risk.
- Anesthesiologists have the highest suicide rate among doctors (290 per 100,000).
- Dentists were once thought to have higher rates than doctors, but current data does not support this.
4. Suicide Methods
- Doctors and veterinarians often use drug overdoses.
- Dentists have access to nitrous oxide, but thereโs no strong evidence it leads to higher suicide rates.
38 dentists die by suicide annually in the U.S.
This would place them below:
Suicides
OB/GYN & Psychiatry (45 per year)
Dentists (38 per year)
Pediatrics (36 per year)

I find anxiety disorders tend to be better treated than mood disorders. People with OCD in particular - their symptoms get a lot better with a little prozac.

What should I use to study for step 1, I'm planning on taking it dec 1
My school gives 3 months uworld, so I don't want to use it just yet
I am currently in rotations, so just want to make a long-term sustainable study plan alongside my second half of rotations
For reference, I haven't touched preclinical material since last year. Currently going through pathoma videos to get myself caught back up on basic sciences. I have a physical copy of first aid but no USMLE-Rx. I have sketchy. I don't have any q banks - should I get USMLERx, amboss, or just wait until they give uworld 3 months before my test date?
>i hope my license is finally approved today
>it is.
>but it doesnt allow me to do injections even though i had the requisites for it
sigh... time for more emails and more delays...
>>16708969>>16708974start with amboss if you must, just know that it's generally harder than uworld. If you want a quick catch-up, I would disable the 5 hammer questions as they're certified horseshit most of the time. Get the addon that pulls amboss questions into anki cards and have that guide your study.
>>167090931. Would you recommend USMLE-Rx? I always felt kind of weak in preclinical because I was half-assing it the entire time (p/f preclinical)
2. If I go through the full amboss deck and review appropriately, will uworld be a significant hurdle?
3. How long to study for step 2 after doing step 1 dedicated?
>>167091161) I dunno i didnt use it
2) no, but do as much as you can anyways its generally considered to be the most consistent with USMLE
3) Idk man im studying for step 2 rn and only have 4 weeks
>>16709133>>167091163) being said, our institution did some analysis and theres no significant difference between studying for 6 weeks and studying for 6 weeks plus. At least not among our students. I just dont have 6 weeks.
>>16709133So what exactly did you use and how long did you study? How were you scoring in preclinical and did that translate to your study strat for step 1?
Uworld is definitely numero uno for me, but I feel like I need to do content review first
Also for step 2 studying being 4 weeks, what score are you aiming for?
>>16709166>but I feel like I need to do content review firstThis is a trap. UWorld IS your content review, as long as you're using it correctly.
>>16709176I don't think you understand. I don't know anything about anything. Preclinical was essentially a haze of binge eating and drinking followed by cram sessions before every exam
>>16709188You probably remember more than you think. If you really need content review, focus on Boards and Beyond, Sketchy pharm/micro, and Pathoma. Anki might be worth doing for more spaced repetition depending on how much time you have. Just remember that the bulk of your improvement will come from doing practice questions. You won't feel ready at first, no one does, but you should see steady improvement if you keep at it. Active learning is always more efficient than passive learning.
>>16709166I studied for step 1 for 5 weeks, mainly using uworld, NBME exams off of reddit or the class drive or whatever, and FREE120
I also used anki.
I dunno what score I got, I passed.
Step 2, I'm aiming for above 248 since I'm applying emergency medicine. As high as possible, but it's not the most important thing in the application so I'm not losing sleep over it.
Of note, I got honors in my E med rotation and more of my rotations are honors than not, so that's good.
>>16709166>Uworld is definitely numero uno for me, but I feel like I need to do content review firstI recommend watching Boards and Beyond and doing UW when you get tired of watching 8 hrs of videos a day. I wouldn't wait to start UW in the last 3 months either, might as well spend the money yourself and start doing Qs.

How serious are the fouling agents in alcoholic mouthwash and hand sanitizer? Do they just make your hangover worse, or is there some special risk involved? And what other forms of alcohol are safe to drink e.g. can you drink isopropanol?
>>16709203>>16709208>>16709223Okay. Thank you all. I think I'm gonna do this:
Continue pathoma and start amboss qbank for the next week. Take free120 at the end of this week.
Then my rotations start back up - going to go hard on studying for my shelf during weekdays, then Friday night + Saturday will be step studying (finish up pathoma vids + amboss within 3 months). Sunday to relax.
Replace amboss with uworld and nbme's in September, then do a month of dedicated leading up to the test where it's uworld everyday except one day for nbme's. Take step 1, do a rotation for a month while doing step 2 prep (uworld + reviewing shelf exams), then month of dedicated for step 2.
Does that sound reasonable?

Former psych patient here. I came across this comment about psychiatry which strikes me as true:
>I often sit with people with serious mental health diagnosis and they will tell me about the traumas that drove them mad, often child sexual assault and family violence. I ask them if the serivces know about this and they say not. They have often been in contact with services for years, decades in some cases.
>Yet these same people are foreced to take dangerous medication that Big Pharma make huge profits out of.
>I am appalled and disgusted by this.
https://www.theguardian.com/society/2015/may/12/psychiatric-drugs-more-harm-than-good-expert#comments
Basically psychiatry doesn't care about the welfare of patients. Psychiatry just wants to shut psych patients up because they're seen as a nuisance. Drugging patients is an effective way to shut them up.
>Former psych patient here
sorry stopped reading right there
>>16711012Ah yes, that famous caring attitude from the medical profession. I should definitely trust doctors who try to convince me to take poisonous psychoactive drugs.
>>16711021Are these doctors there in your home with you when they're telling you to take drugs?
>>16711030They have been. A few years ago a couple doctors visited where I was living and they had me detained in mental hospital.
Maybe every doctor who carries out involuntary detention should themselves be involuntarily detained for a few months, and injected with the same antipsychotics that they prescribe. If they think this practice is so beneficial for mental health, then surely they would want to go through the process themselves.
Why does every /med/ thread attract psych ward patients and hypochondriacs
>>16711081>why does the thread about the medical industry attract people who have been abused and broken by the medical industryI wonder
>>16711057I agree with you, insane retards shouldn't be involuntarily confined in medical facilities, they should be involuntarily confined in a big stone tower-dungeon somewhere remote like back in the day
>>16711091Interesting idea. Let's test this policy out on you first to see how well it works. You shall be involuntarily confined in a tower dungeon for a year and we'll see how much that process will benefit your life.
>>16711091Can we put those danger spikes like for long term nuclear waste management planning? Also put a great eye, lidless, wreathed in flame on top of the tower (to save on money compared to a panopticon) - that way the schizos can be reassured that someone IS watching them after all!
>>16711081If you admitted, that psychiatry is not medicine, and not science, you could ban them for being offtopic, but you love money you get in that industry so you can't let go, and that is something like bestiality, it cannot be tolerated in civilized society. You found abstraction for the stream of money, which makes you parasitic organism. Psychiater is man of culture of course, like bacterial culture that causes diarhea, it's full of shit, wet, liquid stinky shit.
>>16711096I can imagine tech, that somehows alter the half life of meterial, by exposing it to something, that in the end makes nuclear danger neglible. Also there's a mold that eats radiation.
>>16711097The ultimate goal of medicine is public health(hence it focuses not only on directly treating illnesses as they arise, but also on prophylaxis and informing the public to promote healthy lives)
Psychiatry serves public health by humanely isolating and neutralizing individuals who are harmful to the public
>>16711198But with it's financial model, they just hide everybody... Like I was there first because of I had delusion I'll make money on the interwebz when I was 17, they didn't trust me, they didn't even wanted me to show them(I was actively grinding freelancer.com then, with profile with fake age, I've also got gmail with fake age and I was google+ beta tester) That said, I've been there, fed those pills I couldn't refuse, because I left highschool, smoked cannabis ocassionally and did what I was good at. When I was 15 year old alcoholic, nobody stopped by and said that I am sick or something, but it's psychosis when you refuse to cut grass for your mom, because you're being paid like 30 times her hourly wage.
Last thing my family got on me, was restricting my legal rights to manipulate my own property because I invested all money into bitcoin, binance blockchain and ether in 2019, and later I got loan, so I don't have to sell my crypto assets. I understand the fact, that every second ad on facebook in that time was some crypto scam, but holy shit, I was there when people changed few bytes just to have different checksum, and whole evolution, I've even had got 50 bitcoin somewhere when it was cheap as fuck... But somehow, I got ECT because bitcoin doesn't put food on table, and got refused my rights to do as I will with my property...
Please tell me more about how your aunt got scammed of all the cash when she won 0.25btc but needed to deposit 0.5btc to withdraw it.

>>16709987sterilizing, no. Removing from the gene pool, yes. Can anyone condemn to death? No, except in self-defence. Just a magistrate can arbitrarily judge and kill. This becomes more complex when you consider overthrowing a government which is detrimental to society: it is in no way sedition, but instead a virtue to preserve the spiritual and material well-being of society.
For this reason we observe that if the health of the whole body demands the excision of a member, through its being decayed or infectious to the other members, it will be both praiseworthy and advantageous to have it cut away. Now every individual person is compared to the whole community, as part to whole. Therefore if a man be dangerous and infectious to the community, on account of some sin, it is praiseworthy and advantageous that he be killed in order to safeguard the common good, since "a little leaven corrupteth the whole lump" (1 Corinthians 5:6).

>>16711198The purpose of medicine is to help the health of individuals. By your logic, the criminal justice system is part of medicine, because it "serves public health by humanely isolating and neutralizing individuals who are harmful to the public".
Also doctors are all about doing no harm, right? If psychiatry is harmful to its patients then that automatically makes it wrong, regardless of whatever benefit it might give to the public.
>>16711283He confuses threatening status quo, which often happen with psychiatric patients, with threatening society. He's sociopath. He won't understand human speech.
>>16711283That's where you're wrong
Just like a doctor will have no mercy killing cancer cells to save the organism, there should be no mercy containing the psychos to save the public
Think my example is too extreme? Consider a traveler arriving to your city carrying an infectious deadly disease. He's begging to be let in, he's hungry and exhausted. Should a doctor 'do no harm' and help the poor man, thus condemning thousands of people to die by disease spread?
You should be thanking modern psychiatry, because if it weren't for that you worthless psychos would be simply exiled or euthanised

>>16711329Most specialists are hyper-specific retards who know maybe a dozen factoids to do their job. We have no more polymaths among any worthwhile philosophy of science. Psychiatrists are inferior to psychologists in my professional experience.
>>16711348>Robert Root-Bernstein is considered the principal responsible for rekindling interest in polymathy in the scientific community.[17][18] His works emphasize the contrast between the polymath and two other types: the specialist and the dilettante. The specialist demonstrates depth but lacks breadth of knowledge. The dilettante demonstrates superficial breadth but tends to acquire skills merely "for their own sake without regard to understanding the broader applications or implications and without integrating it".[19]:857 Conversely, the polymath is a person with a level of expertise that is able to "put a significant amount of time and effort into their avocations and find ways to use their multiple interests to inform their vocations".[20]:857[21][22][23][24
>>16711283>getting filtered by the trolley problem

>>16711485Because I don't care to. I want food on the table and time for my hobbies, not to know everything about all of medicine to be a dancing monkey for admin abuse. That's why we have specialists and generalists to begin with, although one person COULD do everything (you can do surgery in America with just an MD and license without board certification) it isn't advisable to spread yourself too thin

No structural issues, EEG shows both temporal hemis can be foci

I can imagine it causes a lot of frustration and confusion being a patient with chronic pain. It must seem like fixing things is simple, and that underlying biological constraints are not a major limitation. "Why can't you just do a pancreas transplant?" etcetera. Seeing the options that are available doesn't show the decades of options that were tried and had worse outcomes. Ignorance is an immense burden.

But even if I was diagnosed as a schizo, I think it's pretty appalling that doctors can just wave away what a patient says as a "schizo rant". What if a schizophrenic patient is trying to tell their doctor about real abuse that the patient has suffered, and the doctor says some shit like "no that's just a schizo delusion"?
Psychiatry is fucking terrible. I think voluntary psychiatry can be okay, if a patient wants to use psych meds. But locking people up and drugging them forcibly - surely this is immoral.
