How bad is Indian academia overall? I was thinking of applying for a postdoc at an IIT once I finish my PhD in America. But I have heard very bad things about these institutions, like how they have rampant academic fraud and toxic work environments. Is IIIT less sketchy than IIT?

Are you Indian? If you are, it's more respected than by Indians than MIT is by Americans. If you're not Indian, you'll be seen as a novelty, but you won't get to take advantage of Indian nepotism and racism.
Unless you're getting a full ride scholarship, it's going to be a waste of your time if you're not Indian.

I have heard IIITs (triple I T) are more modern and professional and have less fraud than the IIT/IISER type colleges Is that worth a shot?

If this is a genuine thread and not bait, don't do a postdoc anywhere that you think wouldn't want to work as a professor. The life of an Indian post doc is very different (and worse) compared to an American grad student or even post doc

It's genuine. I want to be a professor. But I don't want to live abroad. I know that Indian academia is absolute shit, even in the top universities. That's why I'm faced with a conundrum.

Living abroad isn't sunshine and daisies. You have to trade off the social alienation and racism with the good facilities you won't find in India.

The answer to your question depends on what you even want to do. If you mean that you want to work in India as a professor, then absolutely not. If you want to learn to just work in industry,then absolutely not. Its horrible country.
