Take a walk. Take a shower. This has been discussed to death. If you have never done competitions, learn problem solving techniques from Larson or Zeitz.

You just stare at it long enough. Maybe hit your head on the wall a few times. Then you’re taking a shower two months later and you suddenly realize how to solve it. That’s how my PhD went.
