Have any of you actually seen the double slit experiment? I dont mean light interference but the detection of the particles before they go into the slit.

No, it is not a thought experiment. It is a real experiment. I have read the set up, but never seen it in any form. Very few have and that is why most people (physicist incl.) don't even understand what is required for the experiment, despite their love of talking about it.
