I ask as I live in a terraced house and there's often a strong smell of weed upstairs, particularly in the front bedroom (house also has a loft/attic) coming from my neighbours' house (he's unemployed).
I'm a teetotaler/non-smoker and so I worry that being able to smell cannabis means it's strong enough to cause some degree of intoxication and affect me cognitively. Is this a valid fear? What does the science say?

In your scenario, no, you're not going to get high from smelling a bit of your neighbor's skunk weed. Hot boxing is a thing, so if you walk into a place where others are smoking and you stay there for a while, you can indeed be high from the ambient smoke.

The smell is very intense, I walk into the room and BAM there it is. I just don't want to be violated in my own home desu, and I value being sober. I've heard of contact high when you're in the same room/vicinity as somebody smoking but I don't know how/if physical walls prevent contact highs despite the smell seeping through.

In theory, it is effecting you, to a very tiny bit, sort of like how someone rearranging their room on the other side of the planet impacts how gravity is pulling you. It's too little to actually impact your mental abilities in any appreciable manner beyond your annoyance at having to smell skunk farts.

No, the actual smoke is diffusing in all directions so you should be quite safe from that. However, living next to criminals who stink your home up and donโ€™t care is depressing at best and dangerous at worst (potheads are often robbers, and even when they are not, their delivery driver probably is)

Cannabis as a useful textile is vastly better at literally directly building civilizations than trading pictures of dead people, the constitution was even written on it.

The police have a long tradition of devolving into criminal enterprises which is the entire reason constitution laws had to be created to keep them in check in the first place.

Japanese law would be even worse for the pot heads.
>In Japan, both recreational and medicinal cannabis use is illegal as of 2024, although a law was passed in late 2023 to legalize medical cannabis. Possession can lead to severe penalties, including imprisonment for up to seven years, while the cultivation of hemp is permitted under strict regulations.

Nothing in the constitution says that you get to be protected by a nanny state from smells you don't like, it only says that even if other people don't like it, you get to associate with smells you do as long as you can do it peacefully, but literally just plug your nose if you don't like the way the world smells.
