what compels people to go to the beach when a tsunami is imminent?
regards were putting up lawn chairs on the beach in hawaii
do they think theyll just swim out of it or something?

Leaps in technology and overzealous governments have significantly diminished the effects of natural selection on humanity
Fortunately this is a feedback system, people can't keep getting dumber indefinitely, at some point they become too dumb to live and natural selection starts working again

Video?
Serious answer: I only need to hold my breath while I’m underwater, which will probably be less than 60 seconds, which is fine if I stay calm

To be fair to that poor fool who is seen in that picture. Back then most Americans weren't fully aware of tsunamis and their warning signs. And there was no proper early alert system in place in Indonesia.
Just saw a cool natural phenomenon occuring on his vacation trip and thought it would be good to get out of his comfort zone a little bit. I mean who expects the ocean to just randomly throw a 12 foot wall of water at you.
