Science of the 'Human Remains' Recovered from the Titan Implosion?
So the Coast Guard Final Report is out documenting the implosion of the Titan Disaster which happened 2 years ago. Have any /sci/-heads seen it yet? It's here: https://media.defense.gov/2025/Aug/05/2003773004/-1/-1/0/SUBMERSIBLE%20TITAN%20MBI%20REPORT%20(04AUG2025).PDF

I didn't find anything in it regarding the supposed 'human remains' that were recovered. But does anyone know more about the manner in which they died and what could have been recovered? They were at high pressure at depth in low temperature, possibly ~250 times the surface pressure when the sub imploded. What we know is that the death would have been instant, likely tearing up and burning their flesh in an instant, but the only "remains" would be possibly teeth? Calcium can withstand high temperature and pressure but how on Earth did they find teeth (if these are the human remains) at the bottom of the ocean floor with all the debris? Here's more about the remains and some 'sludge' that was found apparently from Stockman Rushton and his 'uniform': https://www.newsnationnow.com/world/oceangate-titan-submersible-items/

Bones are hollow filled with blood at ~1atm, the bones themselves will implode when exposed to that pressure in milliseconds instead of slowly when their porosity will allow the internal pressure to increase with external pressure.

So what kind of "human remains" could withstand that high pressure environment and be able to be recovered?

The flesh seems to have been instant cremation during the implosion like a piston firing off in an engine what what remained seems to be a science mystery.

I flipped through it, turns out there were WAY more serious incidents prior to the disaster. and they were handled in typical oceangate style. kinda a pity the main guy died, it possibly would have been more cathartic to have the entire world get to call hm a stupid arrogant asshole to his face?

I skimmed it but dont see anything mindblowing in it that one wouldn't know already by having seen the netflix documentary.

I did read the accoustic monitoring system section in particular since I never understood how exactly they thought that would work and after reading it concluded that I still have no idea. Might as well make an app that uses a phone's microphone to show a nice bar, put it on a wall and call it acoustic wall monitoring.

They're never going to come out and say it because it'll be viewed as too macabre, but the human remains are likely teeth and/or bone fragments that have tiny bits of soft tissue still attached. That's more than enough to extract DNA and verify identity, which they did have a lab do after the incident, even though they knew who the victims were anyway. It's just part of the process.

But they just did a 300+ page Final Report. You would think that they went through every level of detail, so if the "remains" are in the report (which they should be), when will we get the final word on what it was that they actually recovered?

My guess is teeth as well since they are made out of various minerals like calcium that can withstand high pressure (and temporary high temperature) when the implosion squished their flesh and them incinerated any thing left, minus what can withstand those conditions at the time of the implosion.

By the way, does anyone know if somewhere in the report they go through the physics of the exact manner of their deaths rather than say 'they died instantly'? As gruesome as it is, it is interesting to learn about this because I think this is possibly one of the most cases of gruesome deaths in human history

Ynr the bodies of the Challenger crew were in "a semi-liquid state that bore little resemblance to anything once living."
Anonymous No.16745685
>>16745668
The report is shockingly sparse on many details despite the amount of time that went into it and its length. It does not delve into the physics of the death at all, and really shows no interest in it as it was instant. It's not my area of expertise but my understanding is that the air inside got compressed so much and so quickly that it generated intense heat that only lasted for a fraction of a second and likely wouldn't have been the real cause of damage. It's the compression itself of the air, followed almost immediately by the water that just hits the body so hard that it practically liquefies.

I dont see why it is gruesome at all desu. Unironically one of the most instant and convenient deaths you can possibly have.

Most people will experience much much worse and with much less dignity deaths shitting themselves in a hospital someplace.

Challenger incidentially was probably much worse, that's because the crew capsule detached largely intact and likely were aware all the way down. (So that Is kinda gruesome and sad)

My understanding is the physics of what happened was they were instantly liquefied and then incinerated/instant cremation when the pressure went up to first dissolve them and then cremate as much of their physical matter as possible just leaving what are possibly bones or teeth.

Why this is so interesting is because they say "human remains" but they don't say what the remains were at all. No human ever goes through a death this excruciating because nobody would ever be in a situation where they have the entire weight of the ocean and the atmosphere crushing them to death in an instant.

Also it is interesting that the Coast Guard said they would bring up Stockman on seaman's manslaughter charges but they have no body to take to court. He murdered those people (including himself) so deep in the ocean.

The reason people say "the heat was high" is because you are like air compressed by a piston. (Or in this case, marble rock hard water from all directions).

By the time "the heat is high", you are already very very sludget-compressed-down-to-its-water-no-longer-being-compressable shaped and literally at that point its the least of your problems.

let's do a back of the envelop calculation
estimate the air pressure inside the sub is at 1 atm = 100 kPa
estimate the depth of the titanic is at 4km. at that depth, the water pressure is about 400 atm = 40 MPa
invoke the ideal gas law, PV = nRT
assume the implosion is adiabatic because it happened so fast, so PV^gamma = constant
for diatomic species like N2 and O2, gamma = 7/5
before the implosion, [100 kPa] * [5 m^3]^[7/5] = 1e6 ish
after the implosion, [40 MPa] * V^[7/5] = [1e6]. solving for volume, we get about V = [0.1 m^3]

let's now assume that the air in the sub was around room temp of T = [300 K]
also assume the amount of gas is constant, therefor PV/T = constant
before the implosion, [100 kPa] * [5 m^3] / [300 k] = 1700 ish
after the implosion, [40 MPa] * [0.1 m^3] / T = 1700. solving for T, we get [2300 K] = [2000 C] = [3700 F]
this is under ideal circumstance, so the actual max temperature of the air would almost certainly have been less

the surface of the sun is about 5700 K

while the temperature seems high, the materials inside the sub would have been exposed to it for maybe 1 ms before cold seawater and shrapnel subdivided and cooled the air mass. there wasn't any time for heat conduction of any amount to have taken place before the entire thing was cooled to ambient temperatures

The sub wouldn't have failed everywhere. All it would have taken was a single point of failure and the sub would have imploded and liquefied them. The rest of the ship didn't have to fail, and even after the implosion the rest of it would still have been more or less able to withstand the crushing pressure, because again, all it takes is a single square cm of failure.

He was running his mouth in the early days of the incident like he was an expert just because he went to the Mariana Trench once, but just about everything he said turned out to be wrong. He insisted that he and his buddies "in the community" had inside info that they were trying to surface prior to the implosion because they knew it was coming, but we know now that they sent routine messages indicating no issue up until seconds before implosion, so that's something James Cameron just made up.
