Pathways in the brain grow stronger with repeated stimulation. So if you've spent a significant portion of your life dwelling on negativity and feelings of powerlessness, there are going to be long term effects of that which is an unfortunate reality.
If that describes you, don't expect to ever wake up one day "cured." But you absolutely can do your best to stop the bleeding and push yourself in the right direction.
