What forms of gene editing do you expect to become available to the average person within the next half century or so? Designer babies? Editing of adults? What will they look like?
And how good will they be? For example, will they be able to ensure your child will grow up to be smart, attractive, and athletic simultaneously, or will they merely be able to take out certain deleterious genes like those associated with autism and dwarfism to give your child a better shot at the genetic lottery?

In my experience you can literally pop people into existence with your mind. So what good is it?

People started posting and avatar'ing this character everywhere a while ago. I'd never seen the show but I liked the idea (red hair and yellow eyes was a pre-existing fixation), so I focused on it. Within a week I see a woman just like her walking down the street. Same figure, same clothes, long red hair in a braid, pale skin. Eyes weren't yellow though, more hazel-green. This is not a high population density or high throughput area, so if such a woman existed I suspect I would have encountered her at least once prior.

Happened with other characters as well.

I guess the inability to manifest yellow eyes though implies it has to be believeable. So we'd need to make up a mechanism to make it possible. That seems a bit too roundabout and reactionary though, should just go way back and assume they always existed.

Germline editing might just become a very touchy subject, not only in some "moralistic" sense but due to unpredictability of messing with such complex systems. What could become a pretty common thing might be tissue modding, "synthetic" organs with improved functionalities and (would be feasible today) direct immune editing through modified differentiated PBMCs. Last one could have a good safety profile if a kill switch is incorporated just in case.

You pretty much already can design your baby if you're a billionaire. You can use certain websites.

>"synthetic" organs with improved functionalities and (would be feasible today) direct immune editing through modified differentiated PBMCs.

This has been a sticking point for me in sci-fi and why having some kind of purely mechanical prosthetic of a limb or organ will never make sense as a desireable long term solution.

That said, even a smooth brain like myself is aware the body can't use anything it doesn't have "instructions" for so if you had some kind of augmented organ would you have to somehow adapt the body to make it learn how to use the organ and its features or would that happen as the updated genetics of the new organ interact with the body?

I have a top 1% IQ and a good looking face and I'm really anxious about the idea that I could be downgraded to just being some 5/10 midwit by gene editing.

Not only that, but even those people that just kinda obsoleted you may be immediately obsoleted by the next generation of designer babies and gene edits. You may see a pattern where gene editing is good enough to slightly increase the intelligence, attractiveness, and athleticism of the average person, only for some new tech to roll out and become enough to give everybody exception intelligence and beauty and athleticism, only for the next to give everybody absolute tip top genius athlete supermodel bodies, only for the next to start incorporating superhuman traits like respiratory systems with avian efficiency or the ability to biologically synthesize vitamins humans usually can't naturally produce and axolotl healing and etc etc etc.
One day even genetically engineered übermensch may be so physically and psychologically obsolete by the standards of the average person that the only way they can survive is off of charity and government welfare.

why would you think you won't be able to edit your genes if you're oldfag? just upgrade anytime. takes a few years for all cells in your body to be replaced
Anonymous No.16753465
>>16753424
Because your body has already matured and grown and its capacity for change is greatly reduced. Minor changes are still possible and have been accomplished already in mature animals iirc but some changes will be so major they’ll require alterations along the scale of replacing entire organ systems, or literally replacing the brain. It’s not that it’s never going to happen, but it will take much, much, much longer to figure out than designer babies

None. It will be banned. They banned stereoids for private and non competitive use. Simply because 'you don't need it', the abuse potential, anti-liberalism and probably being jelly fags.
Imagine how the same lawmakers who banned roids for you will be foaming with anger when you start maxing all your stats with an injection at a time. Nah, they will only allow you to use it to heal when youre seriously ill, its life threatening and no alternative cure exists.

Maybe at first, but once the technology becomes reliable enough the countries that apply it universally first will have a huge economic and military advantage thanks to their smarter, healthier, and more athletic population. At that point I think even the most conservative and controlling of governments will slowly start to releasing it to the public

Arguably, American football already is such a technology that specifically and explicitly raises youth that willingly give themselves brain damage for imaginary points.
This also explains why soccer players dive all the time.

My example of roids still works perfectly fine. There is a potential positive health impact but also an abuse potential for both, with potential detrimental effects. Hence they will still not liberate this. At most they would choose to make it prescription only and doctors straying far from hypocratic ideals is nothing new.
But I still think not even this will happen and it is due to this cutious and envious mindset.
You know: Chad isn't afraid and blasts gear. Looks bettery is stronger remains healthy. Low impulse highly risk averse lawmakers envy and hide behind alleged concern for chads health.

Steroids when used wrong also significantly increase mortality rate and also pose a public safety hazard thanks to things like roid rage. While gene editing could theoretically make every single one of your citizens stronger, smarter, more attractive, longer lived and healthier without any of the tacked on side effects. A nation that gives everybody steroids has just created a health crisis and potentially upped its crime rate. A country that makes its whole population designer babies has a population of far more economically productive individuals who will likely cause less strain on healthcare and welfare thanks to the removal of many deleterious traits like autism and other genetic issues, people who are more scientifically productive and less likely to engage in lowest common denominator behaviour (violent crime, drug and alcohol abuse etc) thanks to their greater intelligence. They will also be more capable soldiers than those of other nations (with better decision making, more strength and stamina meaning they can cross more ground and carry more gear, better senses meaning they are more capable of spotting and targeting enemies, better health meaning less casualties from non-combat related issues like disease, you know the drill) that don’t edit their own. Parents will want their kid genetically edited to give them the best shot at life, parents don’t want their kids on gear because it’s gonna give them a heart attack.
I don’t know who Chad is or why you’re referring to him.

Chad doesn’t exist when genetic engineering becomes the norm. Chad’s genetic advantages simply become the traits of the Everyman.
It’ll be very interesting to see how the romantic and sexual habits of a society change when everybody is roughly equal in physical attractiveness. Do women judge men vastly more harshly on status and wealth to compensate? How do men act differently, if at all? Will there be more or less infidelity? Who knows

It is within a governments best interest to make it available. It’s probably just gonna be very expensive for a long while. They’ll make you buy genetic “packages” for your children.
Like one that ensures your children will have DHT resistant hair that won’t go bald
Another to ensure they have good memory and pattern recognition
Another for high conscientiousness
Another for height
Another for healthy blue or green eyes
Another for dick size
Another for athleticism
Etcetera. And each one might be several hundred or several thousand dollars each, and might come in tiers or levels (like for height level 1 ensures your children reaches average height or above but does nothing more, level 2 ensures they turn out 6’2+, level 3 6’5+ - or for intelligence each level corresponds to a standard deviation in IQ, etc), with each higher tier being much more expensive but ensuring better results.
In such a way the rich ensure their children a huge advantage and genetic engineering companies make trillions. This continues for decades, with laws in place to prevent startups from toppling the monopoly and ensuring this tech stays in the hands of the powerful, until a country with a government-controlled economy like China simply decides to cover and give it out to all their citizens. This would give them an enormous economic and military advanced over other nations which could only be closed by them doing the same.

If it’s even possible to develop AI intelligent enough to control sophisticated and large-scale systems without human oversight. I really doubt that’s coming any time soon, if at all.

human oversight can be done by a few elite, also think about the fact that ai doesn't need to serve humans, i don't know why everyone automatically assumes ai is a tool to be used by everyone, those large scale systems will be abandoned if they don't serve an elite's goal, this is a race, not some benevolent humanistic commune
