NASA contest picks 25 plush finalists for Artemis II zero-g indicator

On Artemis I it was a Snoopy doll, as a retro nod to the Apollo program. This time, Woke NASA has selected a diverse short list, including foreign nations like Peru with no relation to the US space program. Because NASA loves them some diversity. NASA will select the winner so you know how this is going to turn out.

Let's be very honest again, we don't have a commercially available heavy lift vehicle. Falcon 9 Heavy may someday come about. It's on the drawing board right now. SLS is real. You've seen it down at Michoud. We're building the core stage. We have all the engines done, ready to be put on the test stand at Stennis... I don't see any hardware for a Falcon 9 Heavy, except that he's going to take three Falcon 9s and put them together and that becomes the Heavy. It's not that easy in rocketry.

If Congress doesn't pass a budget and just does a CR, NASA could continue on as normal, so Duffy is working on cutting NASA's budget BY HIMSELF with no legislative mandate

Saarshit jeets literally designed ceramic blocks that will explode the ship every time it re-enters due to a design flaw. Yes, they inlayed stainless steel sheets INSIDE THE BLOCKS so that they crack and break under the intense heat and pressure of re-entry. This is probably why saarshit keeps catching on fire and exploding every time they re-enter lmao

Lockheed is oldspace who can get the job done, with the expectation you’ll be paying a little bit more to stuff some pockets.
Blue Origin has basically the same set of resources as LockMart and can undercut and get you a hella low price—at the cost of huge uncertainty.
I agree, I’d go with Lockheed. And if you want redundancy maybe make up a new contract basically tailored to be given to SpaceX for the same thing.
Rocketlab will never be a serious contender

If it’s reusable rockets, which will be most of Chinese launches within 3-5 years, you don’t have to worry about them falling into another countries waters and causing an incident. https://arstechnica.com/space/2025/08/after-recent-tests-china-appears-likely-to-beat-the-united-states-back-to-the-moon/

Yet another fearmongering article from Eric Berger. Real bad red scare vibes going on. China doesn't have a single working system right now. The LM-10 is only going to make her maiden flight in 2027 and there's no real way to test their Lanyue or Mengzhou on their intended lunar orbits without it. Hell, the LM-10 will be their very first super heavy lift rocket, which will of course lead to teething issues and delays. They don't even have reusable rockets or anything like Starship.

Meanwhile, the SLS and Orion is flight tested and has already made lunar orbit. They're flying crew to a lunar transfer orbit in 8 months. SpaceX is still the GOAT and moving faster than anyone else by an order of magnitude. The entire system for Artmeis III is already more or less complete, while the chinese are still doing static fires. I just don't see any scenario where China can beat America to the Moon. Worse case scenario, Artemis III take places in 2028, which is already a year ahead of China's most optimistic timeline. Why does Eric Berger think that China has any chance at all?

Looks super small. If they're planning on launching anything larger than a small lift lift rockets or plan on more than a single launchpad, they will need some extensive land reclamation works. Also that bridge is tiny. And why an small island barely a kilometer away from the mainland? And it being near a populated city too...

Is there really nowhere better to build a new coastal launchsite? Maybe a little nearer the equator too?

Do you really need a guy from a think tank to elaborate on why China scoring a major PR win would be bad for America? The average joe can easily give you the reasons. Hell Eric Berger is a smart guy, he can probably come up with a dozen reasons himself.

Seriously, I can't believe that Eric Berger got a guy from the Heritage foundation, which is such a toxic topic currently, to comment on the brain dead obvious reason of why letting your enemies win is a bad thing.

And even “space is fake and gay” groypers have taken a “this is the white man’s achievement” fascination with Starship reusability. Boomers think it’s cool and even never-eloners call for SX to be “nationalized” to remove musk, because they think the product is cool.
Starship and SX are naturally inspiring to all and people are even giving it the “separate art from artist” benefit of the doubt yet all elon does is tarnish his name and chimp out and peddle lowest-common-denominator AI garbage tweets all day now.

>A frequently noted competitor to Moore’s law is known as Wright’s law, which has aeronautical roots (Wright 1936). Wright’s law (also called power law, experience curve and Henderson’s law) relates some quality of a manufactured unit (for Wright, airplanes) to the volume of units manufactured. The equation expresses the idea that performance—price or a quality metric—improves according to a power of the number produced or, alternatively stated, improves by a constant percentage for every doubling of the total number produced.

Musks greatest achievements are not in the past, but will happen in the future, namely Starship and actually working widely deployable and cheap self-driving just to name the two most obvious ones
but after that you have humanoid robots, AGI, merging with AGI (or whatever else you might do with a BCI)
popularizing EVs and creating a high cadence partially reusable rocket is going to be small compared to self driving EVs and actually a fully reusable even higher cadence massive rocket

Chinoids will beat him to it, their stuff is catching up very fast, almost up to scratch with Tesla FSD and Elon was too fucking retarded and autistic to believe in lidar costs dropping (it has, massively) whereas every chinoid EV has lidar ready to go. He has fucked himself.

Internal Liner has to be entirely replaced, Casting the propellant is usually a significantly higher proportion of the cost of a SRM than a Liquid launcher, also Nozzle and TVC of a SRM usually degrade quicker than for a liquid engine, and finally parachute recovery and no option for reentry burn often means larger stresses during recovery.
You can reuse SRM, and it may even be possible to do it economically, but it's never going to be as economical as a liquid rocket.

They're lacking in coastal launch sites. Also, launch sites are in operations for decades, sure this might suit their needs for now, but in 20-30 years? I have the feeling that we will see land reclamation works eventually. Launching medium rockets so close to a city also feels quite dangerous. Hard to believe that there wasn't a better location over China's massive coastal length.

Also, it is only for the CZ-12? Or other rockets? How many launchpads are planned to be built?

I don't think China is gonna to stop developing too. Obviously if they're actually serious about the Moon base, they're gonna to lean heavily on the LM-9 and start developing a new lunar lander. I won't be surprised if there's some kind of upgraded lunar lander that's meant to fly on the LM-9 currently in the early R&D phase right now.

>US defense officials have long worried that China's Guowang satellite network might give the Chinese military access to the kind of ubiquitous connectivity US forces now enjoy with SpaceX's Starlink network.
>It turns out the Guowang constellation could offer a lot more than a homemade Chinese alternative to Starlink's high-speed consumer-grade broadband service. China has disclosed little information about the Guowang network, but there's mounting evidence that the satellites may provide Chinese military forces a tactical edge in any future armed conflict in the Western Pacific.
>The megaconstellation is managed by a secretive company called China SatNet, which was established by the Chinese government in 2021. SatNet has released little information since its formation, and the group doesn't have a website. Chinese officials have not detailed any of the satellites' capabilities or signaled any intention to market the services to consumers.
>Unlike Starlink, the Guowang network consists of satellites manufactured by multiple companies, and they launch on several types of rockets. On its face, the architecture taking shape in low-Earth orbit appears to be more akin to SpaceX's military-grade Starshield satellites and the Space Development Agency's future tranches of data relay and missile-tracking satellites.
>Guowang, or "national network," may also bear similarities to something the US military calls MILNET. Proposed in the Trump administration's budget request for next year, MILNET will be a partnership between the Space Force and the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO). One of the design alternatives under review at the Pentagon is to use SpaceX's Starshield satellites to create a "hybrid mesh network" that the military can rely on for a wide range of applications.

assuming that still holds, even if flight 10 and 11 both have perfect soft landings, then v3 would still have to do 12 and 13 perfectly as well before an actual catch attempt was done on 14

maybe v2 and v3 are similar enough that they don't need 2 in a row (not that much further stretched or whatever)

It OBVIOUSLY doesn't though. Look no further than Starship. It's a disaster. They have infinite money to do what they want and it's a disaster. NASA is beholden to the political winds of America for their funding, which absolutely cripples them, but Shuttle worked on the first flight and never failed due to incompetence. Challenger was because of SRBs which NASA was forced to use due to congress and budgetary constraints. And Columbia was due to them being absolutely forbidden to fix known issues after the shuttle exited it's test flight campaign, another political handicap. If NASA actually had an unlimited vehicle development budget and an their funders had an unlimited tolerance for failure like SpaceX, NASA would produce a version of Starship which was actually functional and much better. NASA got forced to cancel Venturestar because it had leaky hydrogen tanks ffs. Imagine if they could blow up 10 of them in a row andget away with it?

IMO best option would have been to force SpaceX to come up with an actually reasonable proposal. Musk himself has stated many times that Falcon Heavy is able to loft a crewed lunar lander in 2 launches. So why didn't he do it?
SpaceX already had all the parts on the shelf to make the propulsion elements of an Apollo style LEM in 2018. Strip a dragon down and use as the upper stage of the lander, bootleg a lower stage using superdraco or something.

NASA wouldn't have been able to give the incentive for SpaceX to develop a smaller lander that is much less Starship-derived.
They could however have given the incentive for SpaceX to develop a 9m third stage that would go on top of the Expendable S2 (which is something that's already being developed anyway)
Anonymous No.16758034 [Report]

NASA doesn't have the funding for a permanent moon base, full stop, and with the clear trend of decreasing NASA share of US federal budget it will never have it. So who else can pay for it?
USSF? USAF/USSF hasn't cared about men in space in over 50 years
International partner? Just look at their space program budget, the share of crewed budget in that budget and their general medium term economic outlook, and it'll always come with either money exchange or barter.
Musk? He's totally uninterested in lunar colonisation, just look at his latest tweet "some work for returning to the moon", kek, he's single-mindedly focused on Mars

So there needs to be another billionaire supporting this and eating some of the losses, and Bezos is one of them.
Anonymous No.16758053 [Report]

Someone gets it, at last. But yeah let's spell it out for everyone in the room: USSF too busy working on MILNET and Golden Dome. Billionaires run launch service providers and don't have the institutional knowledge required for all the components of a lunar or mars base. Other countries, China included, don't have the funding required for a serious lunar colonization effort.

They're not, USAF & NRO concluded in 1969 that they didn't need human in space when they cancelled MOL, in the 55 years since unmanned capabilities have only increased, just look at what the Space force is working on, SDA, Milnet, there's no room for humans in-situ.

So they'll promote a lunar constellation and maybe a bit of surface unmanned capabilities, but they absolutely will not care about "permanent crewed base"
