What's the point of getting good with mathematics and science if you don't or can't get a formal education or qualification in science?
It's me. Too broke to study science and become a scientist, but I read a lot and feel like I could take on at least some Batchelor of Science exams in statistics, biology, zoology or paleontology, but know I'll never get to.

If we keep asking what the point is to doing anything then we arrive at why do anything at all?

1. Learn German.
2. Enroll at Fernuni Hagen.
That’s it.

I have a job. I'm a bartender. I'm very insecure about the fact that my coworkers tend to be part of a laddish culture, and, they don't tease me, but they are often surprised or even impressed at how much knowledge I have over science.

>1. Learn German.
That's not simple anon
It will take years for him to master a foreign language
If you are going for a uni education, you need master level close to native, not just fluency

Don't know where you are, but in the US anyway there are community colleges where you can get at least an associate's degree, sometimes with a partnership with a local university so the credits can also count towards a bachelor's. Save up some money and start there. If you get the associate's you might be able to get a job somewhere at a low level where they'll pay for further training. It takes work and diligence but the opportunities are out there. Look into scholarships or government programs as well.

The only other thing (behind intelligence) making a good scientist is focus on the questions he wants to answer.

Find sponsors. Whether convince your parrents to get rich or die trying, or find a wealthy girl, or wealthy friend of your relatives who knows that you're alright and can make a good scientist and make the sponsor also glorious as some Dyagilev of a more interesting field than ballet.

>lonely thought
bit of a downer, wot? i like to imagine some sort of rougelike process of sneaking around a problem observing its attributes and when enough is got, jumping on it and pummeling the crap out of it.

People mentioned Fernuni Hagen, I remembered checking its curriculum and comparing it to other math bachelor program in Germany, like Bonn's. And it seems they are quite different, the Hagen one definitely covers less.
I doubt it would be easy to transfer or do a master in a standard German university after Hagen.
Just a warning.
Because some foreigners plan to do that, take courses from Hagen, exam at the local German embassy or Goethe Institut, then do their 2nd year or thesis at a normal German or other EU universities. Because supposedly it's an accredited public university, and all of them teach the same thing. Simply not true.

nobody serious cares what the university teaches
you are not gonna learn anything meaningful in a few hours of lectures
it's all about self-studying
if you finish with a top grade even at a mid university, you can get a accepted at a good one for postgrad
only thing that matters is getting the right papers for HR screening
learning is up to you

Sure, but that doesn't make it an equivalent opportunity to the German schools which are subsidized for foreigners.
