Is it inevitable that any "intelligent" species will be burdened by a major divergent (precursor) species unadapted to civilization, resulting in global societal decline? It would seem that the evolutionary processes that brought about the conditions for modern civilization also bring about the rise of these other species which result in its downfall.

It would seem to me that the blunting of in-group preference by modern societies results in the inability for the dominant species to continue killing competitors (like what happened to now-extinct non-human hominids). What else explains the difference in outcome for the Neanderthals, for example? Am I just making this call too early in history?
