how do I build a github portfolio for computational physics? like how do I get ideas on what to work on and projects that are related to my field and are at my level? people tell me to just contribute to someone else's code, but everything is either too complicated PhD stuff or not related at all with what I want

Just look at any problem in your text book and try to solve it. There are a lot of numericals everywhere.

yeah this is how its done in the tech field. your portfolio often starts with harder problems from your textbooks and then gradually shifts to more real world applications.

contributing to others projects is a good idea too but it might be too difficult if you're just starting out. you dont have to limit yourself entirely to physics either. you can have some stuff on economics, or analyzing social media trends, or do some work in computational chemistry, etc.

No one is asking for your github portfolio.
Companies that do simulation, just buy softwares or fund/contract local research groups. They also hire phds for cheap if needed.
Research groups tend to push garbage homegrown software and libraries that no one else uses.

SIAM, springer, etc. has a bunch computational and numerical projects.
Perhaps you can do Rubin Landau’s book in entirety.

Doing well in numerical math/analysis and computational physics and simulation courses and HPC courses is better use of your time, imo.

Just ask AI for ideas and let it code the rest.
But make sure to make it believable that you did it and don't dump 20 projects in a month.
