Elon Musk acknoledges Chinese Falcon 9s copy is superior to SpaceX's
>Elon Musk, CEO of US private space firm SpaceX, said on Thursday that several Chinese reusable carrier rockets have added aspects of Starship and to a Falcon 9 architecture, allowing it to beat SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket.
>Musk made the comment in another social media post containing a video clip, which showed the fueling rehearsal and static ignition test of Chinese private space firm LandSpace's Zhuque-3 reusable rocket conducted from October 18 to 20 at the Dongfeng Commercial Aerospace Innovation Test Zone.
>The post on which Musk commented also mentioned two other Chinese reusable carrier rockets: the CZ-12A developed by CASC and Tianlong-3 developed by Space Pioneer, adding that "20+more rocket companies are building launch sites!"
>"They have added aspects of Starship, such as use of stainless steel and methalox, to a Falcon 9 architecture, which would enable it to beat Falcon 9," Musk commented
>Wang Yanan, chief editor of Aerospace Knowledge magazine, told Global Times on Friday that Musk's assessment is generally objective. Chinese commercial space companies have indeed adopted some of SpaceX's successful approaches, such as stainless steel structures, liquid methane-oxygen fuel systems, and reusable technologies.

>The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is making remarkable progress on its human spaceflight programme, Gaganyaan. Chairman V Narayanan recently revealed that approximately 90 per cent of the mission’s development work has been completed, signalling a major milestone for India’s ambitions in space exploration as reported by Indian Defence News.
>The Gaganyaan mission aims to send Indian astronauts into low Earth orbit using an indigenously developed spacecraft, marking a historic achievement for the nation. Key technological elements, including a human-rated launch vehicle, life support systems, crew safety mechanisms, and human-centric equipment, are nearing completion. With successful integrated tests already conducted, ISRO is poised to join the ranks of countries capable of independent crewed space missions, reinforcing India’s growing stature in global space science.

>Vast is moving into the final stages of building its Haven-1 private space station, readying for launch in 2026, in a move that could open up a new era in human spaceflight.
>In the past couple of weeks, the California-based startup has completed the final weld on the primary structure of Haven-1, followed by painting. Next steps include integrating the flight article's hatch and a domed window as the company moves closer to realizing its vision of a private space station in low Earth orbit (LEO).
>Haven-1 is designed to launch on a SpaceX Falcon 9 and, at around 31,000 pounds (14,000 kilograms), will be the largest spacecraft to lift off atop the rocket. The space station is planned to host up to four short-duration astronaut missions during its three-year lifespan, with crews of four people spending 10 days at a time aboard Haven-1 (or some other combination of missions totaling 160 astronaut days).

At first I was surprised at this flood in a hot, dry summer, but afterwards I discovered that it was caused by the tropical exuberance of the red weed. Directly this extraor- dinary growth encountered water it straightway became gigantic and of unparalleled fecundity. Its seeds were simply poured down into the water of the Wey and Thames, and its swiftly growing and Titanic water fronds speedily choked both those rivers."

Apple and LEGO did it successfully. It takes the political will to cut down your own fat though. Just like how it’s easier for corporations to focus on shortsighted wins like instant quarter-to-quarter shareholder profit but then getting hammered with the cost of your negligence in long term sustainability a decade or two later (such as Xbox/microsoft currently driving itself in to the shitter) it’s hard for bureaucratic organizations to muster the ability to cut jobs and shitty pocket-lining bloat programs because it’s an instant political loss with returns not showing themselves until much later.

Probably couldn't fit an equivalent amount of BE-4s. The RD-180 is wide but also pretty thin. The Centurion only has a 6m diameter core, which isn't that much larger than the Vulcan's 5.4m, and 4 BE-4s is the absolute max you can fit into a circle that size.

It's look a lot better, though. Larger RD-180 clusters always end up looking like ass.

they don't have a gorillion dollars, they just became cash flow positive a few years ago
starship and starlink capex are going to take a lot of money to setup still
and in any case, that doesn't seem to be Musk's modus operandi really
if he thinks there is some big useful payload market (like in-space manufacturing) that is big enough to matter, then they go into that themselves as well
if your idea is good enough for SpaceX to invest in it (but too far away from current operations or small/unimportant for Musk to do it himself), then it should be good enough for VCs to invest in it as well

why? I'm sure plenty of ex-SpaceX people have become VCs basically as a way to retire (one of the co-founders of xAI did that recently)
seems like Musk is basically all-in i.e. buys a company or creates a startup (as a standalone or inside one of his companies) and then tries to understand it deeply, micromanages it for a while until it has good operators and is running somewhat well
or does not get involved at all, he doesn't really "invest"

Reading this is bizarre. this guy doesn't know anything about rocketry. The extra thrust from raptor 3 gets you maybe an extra 5 tons of payload to orbit? It's not a small improvement but it's not the make or break it this guy thinks it is. It seems he's not even aware that most of the improvement from raptor 2 to 3 is ditching the boosters engines heat shielding. That alone almost brings it to 100 tons of payload.

SpaceX wins in the end.

>falcon 9 comes along
>people predict rise of industry LEO
>spacex scales up falcon 9 10X
>thousands of starlinks up
>making billions in yearly revenue

>starship comes online
>people predict rise of industry in LEO
>spacex scales up starship 10x
>tens of thousands of starliks up
>making tens of billions of dollars in yearly revenue

The winner who rises above the rest will be SpaceX because they just move faster, scale faster, and has ambitious goals. There wont be a "Mars Colonization" program. There will however be a "SpaceX Mars Colonization" program. The heart of the next wave of industry is SpaceX with 90% dominance over the entire space

>The Chinese commercial launch sector sees another new entrant, this one with a very aggressive timeline: a claimed maiden launch by the end of the year. What makes this notable is that they already have hardware, not just plans, with YF-102 kerolox engines supplied directly by CASC. This connection suggests a significant level of state supply chain access.

Now we're not only seeing China copying SpaceX, but China copying other Chinese companies. A 3.35M diameter kerolox rocket using state-procured YF-102 engines is just a clone of CAS-Space's Kinetica-2.

>Yes. The results are difficult to get out - journals are now refusing my papers. The results from the Dresden lab were negative, from the Spanish Lab positive, but with qualifications (I'm a bit sceptical). The results from capacitor tests in California and Virginia that I did not fund but helped with, have been successful and I think I now know why there is a difference. Electrons are a better acceleratand to use than photons. I thank all these labs for helping me see that. A space test has been discussed - that's all I can say at the moment.

Timing the market means trying to predict when investments like stocks will rise or fall, so you can buy them cheap and sell them high to make quick profits.

It's a bad idea because markets are unpredictable. Nobody can consistently guess right. Even if you correctly time an event, like a big news announcement, you can't reliably time the market's reaction to it, which might go the opposite way you expect. Missing just a few good days can wipe out years of gains, and studies show that staying invested over the long term usually beats trying to outsmart the ups and downs.

it wasn't that long ago when it was illegal to fly over land with supersonic civilian planes in the US
now I think its legal, but has to be done in a way so no sonic booms happen at the ground, which decreases the top speed (I think depending on the weather somewhat)
lower top speed decreases the utility of a supersonic plane

SpaceX showed that the delta between what is and what could be is pretty large, there isn't really any existence proof like that with respect to supersonic civilian planes yet

PUTIN:

You have probably heard that a new, the newest missile with unlimited range and a nuclear propulsion system has been tested recently. It has undeniable advantages, and we can be proud of the achievements of our scientists, specialists, engineers and workers who made it all happen.

The advantages are that this small nuclear propulsion system, with comparable power to, say, a nuclear submarine reactor, is a thousand times smaller than a nuclear reactor on a submarine – a thousand times! But the most important thing is not even that – the most important thing is that while a conventional nuclear reactor takes hours, days or weeks to start up, this nuclear reactor starts up in minutes and seconds. That is a huge achievement.

We will be able to apply this in the national economy, we will be able to apply it in the future when solving the problem of energy supply in the Arctic, and we will use it in the Lunar programme. Even now, radiation-hardened electronics used in the Burevestnik missile are already being used in space programmes, so this is a breakthrough not only in terms of enhancing the country's defence capabilities, but also in science and the national economy of the future as a whole.

The cost of the plane will be much more expensive for commercial travel that it might only have some sort niche use cases or military. I don't inherently hate it, you can make those things spit out some neat stuff if you put some time into it. But the barrier of entry is extremely low, and a lot of people just type some stuff and take the first result it churns out. And then there's a ton of that stuff flooding out all over the place, like image search results or Youtube videos, which also ends up drowning out more and more actually good stuff. I don't mind slop threads on 4chan, it's just a bit of fun with people posting silly stuff they genned, but those threads are very self-contained compared to everywhere else. It just gets tiresome seeing the same default styles, like those grainy yellowy Gemini images (you can easily just tell it to not add a yellow filter, but nobody bothers doing that or just doesn't know about it, which goes back to the first point). This will probably sound very pretentious but it's funny how people were freaking out that this AI stuff will destroy artists, but ultimately you still need to have some sense of aesthetics even when you tell a robot to make a pic, and most generated stuff just isn't very good or interesting. I'd wager that the artists that know how to draw are also way better at genning nice pics, if they actually have some idea which they try to refine and some kind of understanding of composition and what looks good etc., or even just colors. Especially if they're using a tool with checkpoints and more robust adjustment options, personally I've just dicked around with those simple generators

I typed that myself, that's actually another thing I've noticed, these days if you write anything a bit longer somebody will just assume you made a chatbot type it for you, because surely nobody is going to write all that themselves (over three sentences). It's an interesting evolution of the tl;dr thing, first people don't want to read more than a couple sentences and now people even assume that nobody is going to write out their thoughts manually

>>16831005
Oh right I got them mixed up, yeah Gemini seemed alright from what I've seen, but then those biggest tools are also funny in that they all are good and bad at different styles. As for the piss filter, I'm sure I've seen people post GPT images without it, but now that I think about it I think they genned a pic first, and then they asked it to remove the piss filter afterwards

You're not a special, privileged observer
So there's nothing special about this particular moment, when you happen to notice a raptor driving past and see that it's number 143.
Therefore, that raptor is probably somewhere around the middle of the list of serial numbers of raptors that will ever exist
So there should be about 300 raptors total once all is said and done.

It's a concern that bubbled for me up recently. One of the Chinese independents successfully flying a reusable launch vehicle would allow them to dominate the Chinese launch market the same way Falcon 9 did the western launch market. That was fine for SpaceX because the DoD/etc like having the improved launch capabilities and SpaceX being successful isn't going to get in the way of Congress shoveling money to their friends in the primes.

It's a bit different in China. If LandSpace or Space Pioneer are successful they wouldn't just gain a stupid amount of money, they'd gain a very large amount of political influence and power, which would be seen as an obvious threat by some established groups in the political establishment. It's not impossible that if LS or SP were successful with the ZQ-3 or LT-3 to see a bunch of sudden "corruption" investigations open up that lead to the management getting Markusic'ed out of their own company.

Extra layers of bureaucracy is an intermediate step. Launch licensing is already a huge issue in China; it's part of the reason why so many independent LVs launch from Yellow Sea barges and why some companies have been looking into launch sites in Oman and Baikonur. Whatever this new agency is will probably be tailored to put the exact amount of breaks on China's independent LSPs that the Chinese primes feel they need to maintain their overall standing.

New berger on autonomous construction in orbit just dropped
https://arstechnica.com/space/2025/10/an-in-space-construction-firm-says-it-can-help-build-massive-data-centers-in-orbit/
>Nvidia recently made headlines by announcing that one of the companies it is partnering with, Starcloud, plans to build a 5-gigawatt orbital data center with “super-large solar and cooling panels approximately 4 kilometers in width and length.”
>To put that into perspective, the eight main solar arrays on the International Space Station—the largest ever assembled in space, requiring many space shuttle launches and spacewalks—span about 100 meters and produce a maximum of about 240 kW. That’s about 0.005 percent of the power Starcloud intends to generate.
>Needless to say, with a traditional approach, that’s a big ask in terms of launch and assembly costs.
>However, it sounds a little more feasible if such an array could be assembled autonomously. And on Thursday morning, Starcloud, along with a new in-space assembly company, Rendezvous Robotics, announced an agreement to explore the use of modular, autonomous assembly to build Starcloud’s data centers.

See now I am starting to understand the argument for datacenters in space.
The AI bubble has been blown so large that the AIbros are looking around and realizing that nobody else wants to move their speed. Power generation, power infrastructure itself, cooling, hardware -- it's all backordered out to the 2030s because all that liquid capital floating around looking for something to invest in has dumped it all on the only thing going. Hell they'd fund China's world takeover if it meant ROI from these things that all the money in the world can't make anyone produce any faster.
So the curious mind looks up and thinks you don't need permitting, don't pay property taxes, don't pay for electricity, don't pay for personnel costs; but the catch is you have to get the thing into space.

If SpaceX was on the market right now it'd be worth more than Nvidia.
