All you're bitching about is the fact that science was formerly a hobby and is now for the most part a career on which livelihoods depend. It is in the hobbyist scientific community that the scientific ideals you're describing flourished. Obviously. these ideals no longer apply.
Change occurs rapidly in hobbyist environments because the stakes are low and the social organization is flat.
The same was true of your churches, where in the beginning there was a much wider interpretation of Jesus's teaching when Christians were tent makers and fishermen and tax men and merchants.
Once a professional priesthood grew up doctrine quickly solidified.
What you're describing isn't a science problem its a people problem (and also why it is essential to gatekeep your hobbies and resist all attempts at commercialization with violent force).
