my take: the "paradox" doesnt exist at all and is a literal psyop because aliens have been here for a while but certain (((groups))) would prefer that kept under wraps. but its still fun to talk about. pic related (she is an alien)

Paradox doesn't exist because for it to exist we have to assume that we know the universal frequency of life and intelligent life to at least some degree, as well as the general trends of development for intelligent life. While in reality the only singular thing we know of such frequencies is that they are above 0 and below 1, and we know so little of the developmental trends of intelligent life that we can't predict our own development for the next 10 years, much less the development of some alien intelligent life over tens of thousands of years.

The whole thing boils down to modern astrophysical paradigm making "crowded space" a natural assumption, and space not actually being crowded in reality emotionally feels like a rugpull. It once felt safe to assume that all the stars are full of civilizations of people going to work, clocking in and building big things necessary for building bigger things. Some felt it like the universal telos or something. If it turns out the local supercluster is not full of alien civilizations doing the same thing, it's suddenly much harder to justify perpetual technological development towards using exponentially more energy to build exponentially bigger shit exponentially farther from our point of origin.Often feels confounding. This feeling is the essence of the "Paradox", really.

Time. Humans are very, very young. Our species has existed for ~10k years, our civilization for ~2k years, and we've only had technology that can probe into space or be detected from space for ~100 years.

Mars, Venus, the moons of Saturn, even our own moon could have had life millions of years ago that went extinct, or life could arise in them millions of years from now.

Outside our own solar system our chances of ever detecting life is extremely remote, even if the galaxy is teeming with life. Some scientists are overambitious and hope to detect Dyson spheres and other megastructures to prove life exists on the galaxy, which is patently ridiculous. If you assume that most science fiction is purely fiction, rather than prophecy, life is extremely hard to detect.

I think people overestimate how easy it would be for us to detect alien life. It seems plausible to me that it’d be too costly and impractical for even the most advanced ayys to do anything that would make them observable across interstellar distances, but I’m no astronomer.

It's a really easy answer: humans are the only sapient life in the Universe and the odds of our existence are low enough that it confirms sapient life (and probably life at all, but maybe there's space pork somewhere) exists nowhere else.

As a biologist I just assume it's isolation by distance. Even on our own planet, sloths in South America have no idea that kangaroos in Australia exist. It was largely the same for humans up until recently. Searching for alien signals is like a bird on one side of a continent trying to listen to calls from birds on the other side of the continent
