Remember when you got totally swarmed by retards for pointing out that those genetically engineered “dire wolves” weren’t actually real genuine dire wolves

Is this not proof that humans are fucking retarded and don’t understand biology and would rather join in on the hype and listen to their feelings than think critically?

Huge paleo nerd here, I’ve known this since day one and I’ve been trying to explain it to everyone I’ve met since, and only recently have they actually started listening to me. It took them a while.

Dire wolves aren’t in the same genus as grey wolves, and they aren’t even wolves at all. They used to be thought of as wolves, hence the wolf in its common name, but a study from around 4 years ago found that they were so heavily distinct from modern wolves that they got placed in their very own genus. Trying to modify a gray wolf into a dire wolf is entirely foolhardy since they are such distantly related species. It would be like editing an a chicken’s genome to be 10% bigger fully grown and claiming that you’ve made a velociraptor.

And yes you’re right OP humans would rather listen to their hearts than their brains.

Can I just acknowledge that they aren't dire wolves but still think that what Colossal did was really fucking cool? I think the argument is that they're not dire wolves but grey wolves genetically engineered to look like dire wolves. This in itself might seem like a pointless exercise as we're not de-extincting any species but it advances genetic engineering which could bring about all kinds of benefits and open up lots more knowledge.

>Dire wolves aren’t in the same genus as grey wolves
>It would be like editing an a chicken’s genome to be 10% bigger fully grown
They're not but maybe they're not that far apart genetically? They separated 5 million years ago which is approximately the same as the donkey and horse which can interbreed. Maybe a better analogy is that if horses became extinct, it would be like editing the donkey genome to make a donkey species that looks more like a horse?

They weren’t retards though. They were correct. Colossal first presented them as actual dire wolves, then when called out on it pretended they actually meant they were just a recreation. The entire company is a massive grift. Even their red wolf project is bullshit

>Can I just acknowledge that they aren't dire wolves but still think that what Colossal did was really fucking cool?
No it wasn’t really cool because the products are genetic wrecks designed to squeeze money from investors. What they essentially did was make an unhealthy wolf. Picrel is how bad their overbites are. If they’re this bad at such a young age who knows what will happen when they’re 15 assuming they even live that long
>I think the argument is that they're not dire wolves but grey wolves genetically engineered to look like dire wolves
Colossal tried to say “if it looks and acts like a dire wolf then it is one” which is retarded since we don’t know what they actually looked or acted like. They don’t even look like our best guess. Their skeletal proportions are different to real dire wolves and the real thing most likely wasn’t pure white. They were deliberately engineered to look like the game of thrones wolves using domestic dog genes to change the colour of the coat
>Maybe a better analogy is that if horses became extinct, it would be like editing the donkey genome to make a donkey species that looks more like a horse?
That in itself would be hard enough, but if we didn’t know what a horse looked like it would be near impossible

What if they could genetically compare the Russian domesticated arctic foxes and wild arctic foxes and genetically engineer domesticated foxes. Would that work?

Might be a cool thing to be able to understand what genes change in mammals during domestication and be able to domesticate any animal for example a zebra or a Eurasian Lynx. Might be cool to have cats the size of big dogs as pets.

What part of that is not understanding biology? They’re not dire wolves genetically, physically or behaviourally

"omg they're real actual dire wolves and not just wolves spliced with dire traits"

He’s saying that the retards are the ones who swarmed the board because we pointed out they weren’t real dire wolves, not that they were the ones pointing out how they’re real dire wolves

Exhuming large animals to the wild is retarded, bears and wolves are dangerous enough. Really we ought to exterminate them too, but as a libertarian I can accept it's your right to keep resurrected dinosaurs on your property if you chose. I despise the environmentalist laws preventing the indiscriminate hunting of wild animals on your property, even when they attack your livestock.

This will be true for any creature we create; it will always be an imitation of whatever original we're approximating. Just like transgenders will never be the same as a woman.

Might be cooler to deregulate the market and allow the engineering of intelligence enhancing therapy to avert the dysgenic collapse of civilization.
Even without stuff like welfare, we're in trouble.

Or you could regulate the market to prevent things that make humans retarded like goyslop?

Not if you were to actually clone the animal instead of doing a couple half assed gene edits
