He pioneered black hole thermodynamics, but his actual scientific contribution isn't that significant. I cannot name a single other thing he did. If he were indeed the #1 GR or quantum gravity researcher, you'd see his name everywhere in the relevant papers. Penrose alone contributed 10x more.
