No you absolutely can and probably even should, there's tons of nice stuff to be found in filler and additional material (movies, DBS...). I don't like ToP overall but even I will admit it had some great moments. DBS Broly was also solid despite a lack of true stakes.
Just don't pretend DBS (or even the anime) is the same quality as the original manga, that's all. And even quality aside, the difference in philosophy is too obvious, DBS will never dare to get past EoZ while Dragon Ball wasn't afraid to age up its MC and give him a son.
