I'm pretty sure that your prison sentence is set, for example "5 years hard labor." Then the parole board might let you out a year early, but add on a year at the parole project and other stipulations. So, by getting out 'early' you might end up doing more time total especially considering all the parole hoops you have to jump through on the outside which no doubt are designed to make you fail.

I agree, there's been one or two smart ones who just deny their own parole hearing when they have less than a year left. You never know if the board is gonna suggest an extra 1,3,5, or more years of probation with stipulations which everyone gets caught up on.
