I think going through all the effort of getting the Shadow Crystals will ultimately be what causes Kris to defect from the Holiday administration. After going through a gauntlet of foes encouraging the party to pursue freedom one way or another, maybe the experience of each schizboss encounter will be what encourages Kris to stick with their friends over the Holiday Administration.
