I bought a case a few months ago for shits and giggles. The menus are bland but palatable, mostly beans and rice. The sides are also fine, the peanut butter ends being the tastiest thing in the pack but it's not like anything is inedible either. The beans and simple menus make them easily digestible, if these things are backing you up then it's your fault, not the HDR's. Bare in mind that these are supposed to be the bare minimum to keep one person alive for one day who's not moving around much, so they're not packed with energy the same way an MRE is. If your intent is to keep these as emergency rations then you'd really want to supplement with a salted meat of your choice, multivitamin, and drink mix to make it a little more well rounded. Maybe some aftermarket FRH's as well since these have no heaters.

tl;dr they're okay, just buy them when they're cheap

They're fine if you intend to use them within a few years of purchase, any longer than that and you're better off just buying a bucket of freeze dried food, hoarding canned goods, or storing beans and rice. Properly stored freeze dried food can easily last decades, MRE's simply can't.
