I was drawing out the form, adding wrapping lines from simple to complex, (so it's like small cylinders bulging out of a main cylinder, or valleys of the meeting points of 2 internal cylinders carved into the main cylinder).
then you use the wrapping lines as a map and imagine your hand as a plane going around the form and if it points away from the light you put terminator there and add midtones when the angle is 60 degrees+ from the light and then add highlights. so you do it this way and avoid even looking at the reference because you're trying to rely on your intuition of how the light will hit the map from the main cyliders to the small cylinders, but you look back if you get stuck. also using the blending tool a lot. hope this helps at all
