Can't we just have both simultaneously, I mean some classic Sonic art had more pseudo realistic settings as well, there was the Man of the Year animation, I think Sonic's world was always meant to be a mix of surreal landscapes and pseudo realism, the only times they went full realistic were Shadow and 06 especially

I think at this point the divide mostly exists to keep both designs alive which is cool, I prefer the modern designs but the classics look pretty cool too. I don't think we can have both unless we create a third design that combines elements but that would be messy. So having the different designs in their own continuities is cool and keeps everyone happy. The problem with the split is that limits both continuities and also creates this weird competition that could cannibalize the series
