The Samus Returns endings had alternate outfits on top of the Zero suit, so I wouldn't consider them abandoned yet, but only on the harder difficulties and then only with the best time.
We have the internet, so it's not like anyone can't ultimately get to see it, and I get it's tradition, but it'd be nice to get some of that not locked behind serious completion these days.
