I rarely mess around with outposts anymore outside of trying to get materials as most of my customization efforts goes into my ship instead, and I install the prefab mods for the city homes like the ones from Downfall Nemesis since they come with some neat interactive features. Maybe if there was more to do with them besides making a getaway home that you'll rarely visit.
