ME1 has the best writing and it did the practically impossible task of establishing a strong sci-fi universe that felt real and was populated by interesting aliens. It also has the best combat and exploration because I'm a fucking nerd who likes RPGs.
Then EA came in and FUCKED 2 and 3 to the point where they're unrecognizable. 2 is still fun but it essentially doesn't have a plot. 3 has some moments, but it's a slog to make it to the end. Mass Effect could have been the best video game trilogy ever, and it's still quite good, but the meddling of the publisher derailed the most interesting parts of the franchise.
