FU is the culmination of the first two generations, minus a few features from Dos (not available in the West anyway). It's also piss easy to emulate. From then on you can try Tri or 3U if you really want to experience underwater combat, and then 4U, which is a pivotal point for the series as World and Wilds are both direct sequels to its design philosophy. Each game has a distinct feel and all are equally fun for their own reasons. I'd completely skip Generations Ultimate if I were you, it offers the most content at the cost of any meaningful direction.
