If you had to ask me, the correct interpretation of Twin Peaks is that it exists as Laura's dream, a product of her mind trying to make sense of her father's abuse. Eventually, Laura can't take it anymore and "dies", running away from Twin Peaks and creating a new identity. She can no longer repress her childhood trauma and eventually comes to terms with it.

However, this itself is partially a dream reality: the original world of Twin Peaks up until the ending (when Cooper prevents Laura from dying, changing the timeline) is actually Laura's dream when Audrey is now the dreamer. Audrey exaggerates the real world and plays up the drama and tension in the town. Things are akin to a soap opera because that's what Audrey wants her life to be like and perceives the controversies and horrors of the community through that lens. It's why she makes things about herself, why she throws herself at Cooper, etc. What we see of Audrey in The Return is the closest we get to the ACTUAL real world and how Audrey has been living in it the whole time. A mundane and boring normal life where Audrey gets old and finally "wakes up". Her waking up is simultaneous to the actual Laura "waking up". Audrey's dream is over and Laura is finally beginning the process of ending her nightmare.
