In the 1950s Navy couldn't get supersonic fighters onto carriers - the supercarrier USS United States was cancelled because it was retarded big and retarded expensive and with the advent of Air Force planes being able to strike anywhere in the world and also being sole distributor of the nuclear arsenal, Navy was very concerned that it's being outmoded.
So they made Convair F2Y Sea Dart as a supersonic seaplane and others, like Martin P6M Sea Master flying boat which was supposed to deliver nuclear bombs. Sea Dart failed mainly because it was shit and tended to violently dissasemble in mid-air, but Sea Master was almost adopted - it was only cancelled after ICBMs became a thing. Sea Dart I don't mind, but Sea Master was a very beautiful aircraft and I wish it was retained for non-nuclear duties.
The saddest part is that Glenn. L. Martin worked with Wright brothers to make military airplanes, made the first naval bomber in history and literally taught Boeing how to fly but after Sea Master was cancelled the company fully focused on making rockets instead of planes. P6M Sea Master was the last plane they built.
