Rune Lord is basically a late 90s early 2000s mecha anime homage. It plays all the tropes extremely straight and with total sincerity. It's cheesy as hell. I'm really enjoying it, but that's because I'm old enough to have grown up on the shows that it's homaging. It's absolutely not that creative and you can basically tell exactly how the story's going to play out right from the start (with a couple of big exceptions, there've been a few twists that completely caught me off guard).
It's very, VERY low budget, but you can tell they're doing their absolute best with the little budget they have. They may have clunky ps1 models, but goddamn the action scenes will flood the screen with particles and there'll be a good royalty-free shot of stars in the background.
I picked it up on a whim because I'd never seen a single person ever mention it, and I'm glad I did. I wonder how many good games are out there nobody's read? There's gotta be some kamige.

So far it's been quite good. It's a late 90s/early 2000s mecha anime, right down to being split up into episodes that each end with a preview that spoils the fuck out of the next episode. The characters are great, the comedy is great, I haven't hit an h-scene yet but there's a lot of random nudity. The fight scenes are mostly pretty good if very short. My biggest complaint is that I sometimes have trouble parsing what's going on in the action scenes. They fucking love flooding the mecha CG shots with lighting and particles like they're bad unreal engine devs, which means whenthey're rapidly switching between CGs it can be hard to tell what exactly is happening. But on the other hand, the fact that every fight has 6+ CGs is impressive in itself.
