In the 1980s special forces used fuckhuge flashlights mounted to their guns. Pic related is a scuba waterproof flashlight that they painted black and mounted it in place of the grenade launcher. These were used in panama right through desert storm when special forces went in SCUD hunting.
Surefire made handgun lights starting in 1988 but special forces were still improvising other flashlights well into the 90s. Sometimes it was just a common maglite put in riflescope rings. So not as bulky as what you see on the cover tgere, but they were indeed used.
