Savoury on the other hand is much more specific. It refers solely to foods that are either salty or spicy and which are not sweet. Since there are obviously tons of umami foods that are sweet and even some that are not like plain peanut butter which is neither salty or spicy.

So savoury never has been and never will be anything close to a synonym for umami. The closest English word that did previously come close would be meaty, but it's also lacking.
