So the weight of the M14 wasn't an issue. Recoil was. Reducing the weight of the M14 made the recoil issue worse with the weapon being entirely uncontrollable when fired fully automatic.
The ammunition issue was just a production one. In time, the 5.56 would become just as cheap as the 7.62. The powder was originally the same powder used in the M14 but got switched out last minute. (IMR 4475). Most of the reliability issues came down to nobody telling Stoner about the new powder until it was in the field and soldiers were being told the rifle didn't need to clean their rifles.

The Duplex Bullet, pic related. It didn't solve the recoil issue, didn't solve the ammo efficiency issue, Definitely didn't solve the rate of fire issue, and was generally just a waste of time.
And with the XM198 being a bust the M14 was just being over run by AK-47s laying down more accurate suppressive fire as soon as they were in range.
