Pretty much this, she is being treated as just another spider person but the fun of her is she's a bit of a schizo/dick. I think biggest thing is she's such a 180 of what made her interesting. She was a evil little girl who had no reason for it, she just liked winning so much she joined a murderer and tried to kill two heroes. Maka has been with Bulleyes for 2 years, she 100% has a body or two under her belt and the fact she did all that with a loving mother no real struggles could be interesting but instead now that she's good makes her look like a hypocrite/schizo. As you said best to lean into her having a massive ego not being a scared little girl who wants "friends" maka in spider boy came off confident and self interested it shouldn't be she can't make friends it should be she has to many hanger ons and can't build genuine connections or most are fake friends but because of her overconfidence and perfection they usually secretly make fun of her or hate her. Then as you said caroline could be the closest to a real "friend" she can have as caroline seems honest to a fault with her trash comment and someone who won't take bs or ego lightly. She has her own but it's the opposite of maka it's a ego earned through hard work diligence and confidence not one made from theft, faking and lies. Caroline also is humble and honorable, shown by how felt bad for using a illegal kick even in a life or death situation.
she is so self interested but realizes she's made up of tons of other peoples selves and has no talent or uniqueness of her own. Like does she like anything everything she does she just walks into but can you truly enjoy being great at something without the process of sucking at it to enjoy it.
Think could be fun to treat her more as a anti hero or more well gray character the opposite of a usual spider man esque character. But have the whole pride cometh before the fall moment hopefully given by Caroline.
