After you beat the boss the vending machine next to Ramb (who himself mysteriously disappears) stops selling the SMILE item so whatever "work" it has to do is probably some bullshit you'll have to deal with later
As far as I can tell ERAM is either wearing the mantle so it covers its body, like how Ralsei wears a cloak when you meet him, or it could be possessing it from afar since it's established all the characters in the Tenna games are controlled by other Darkners and (You) can even play as Susie, Ralsei and Lancer with the right controllers
