XIV started at a decline. It started as a broken shitfest and was revamped into a Cataclysm clone with a fucking Chosen One main story quest and cutscenes. They started leaving because they didn't like the new fucking cutscenes.

I remember WotLK dungeons being the beginning of Blizzard making threat not really a mechanic anymore and everything in dungeons being these braindead AoE spams where the tank would aggro the whole fucking room and you never CC'd anything ever and any sense of team coordination was dead. I also remember this being the beginning of Blizzard making mana not really a mechanic anymore. I remember being kind of shocked when my priest briefly ran out of mana once. It wasn't as bad as whatever the fuck is going on with nuMMO mana management. I don't think you could go OOM in FFXIV unless you actively tried very, very hard. But it was the start of that bullshit.
It was also the start of Blizzard replacing all the flavorful mechanics with garbage. Soulstones were no longer souls reaped from your enemies and stored in your inventory. They're just an ability resource on the top right of your screen that may or may not be related at all to the idea of reaping the souls of your enemies at all. It's also the expansion that they completely got rid of priest racials.
