All of the girls being unhappy as adults is something the game repeatedly hammers home.
I consider it a bigger sequel hook then the abyss stuff at the end and the reason why I think time travel or altering timelines is going to be involved in B&R 2.

Mark my words that B&R 2 will be about attempting to 'fix' everything that went wrong. Up to and including Kat's cancer.
