Well I just finished watching the Masters of the Universe movie for the first time. I'd seen bits and pieces as a kid, but never all the way through.
I liked it. It's like if MOTU was made taking inspiration from Conan The Barbarian and John Carter of Mars, but this movie was trying for the same result using Star Wars and Superman. It's like watching someone trying to replicate a machine, but using totally different parts. It does basically the same thing, but looks almost nothing like the original.
Pros - Dolph Lundgren and Frank Langella as He-Man and Skeletor respecitively.
Langella clearly had a ball in the role and really elevates any scene he's in.
The pacing really keeps the story from dragging, and the whole film feels fun and exciting from start to finish.
Cons - The limited budget meant the the Skeletor and Gwildor prosthetics are stiff as fuck and look like shit in close-ups/motion.
The isekai story designed to keep the budget low, while practical, is annoying.
The film side-lines He-Man himself for large chunks of the movie.
That ending fight between He-Man and God Skeletor is kinda lame, I think mainly because they shot themselves in the foot with Skele's costume and it's just to unweildy. It's also extremely obvious that it switches from the main shiny gold costume, to the dull spray paint gold stunt costume despite their attempts to light it in such a way that it's hidden.
I'm gonna post this over on /tv/ as well for any anons that want to talk about it some more.
